Hot start fuels EOU home non-conference win against Walla Walla University

The Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team scored the first 20 points and were never challenged, cruising to a 112-44 non-conference win over Walla Walla Saturday at Quinn Coliseum.

The win is the 28th in a row for the Mountaineer women on their home court. The last home loss for the Mountaineers came on Jan. 7, 2012, when then-No. 22 Corban defeated EOU 73-59. The Moutaineers have won all four of their home games this season and were 17-0 at home last season.

The 112 points is a season high for EOU, eclipsing the 104 point scored on Oct. 22 against Walla Walla.

EOU rode the strong start to a 36-point halftime lead, taking a 54-18 lead into the break.

Eastern Oregon’s offense continued to click in the second half, Brittney Newcomb remained hot shooting the ball, hitting four 3-pointers to finish with 14 points in the half on her way to a team-high 29 points. Newcomb hit seven 3-pointers in the contest. Lauren Mills scored 14 points, as every EOU player scored in the contest.

The Mountaineers return to action Friday when they face Walla Walla University again in the Caldwell Best Western Inn and Suites Lady Classic. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

EOU will conclude its non-conference schedule Saturday at the classic against Puget Sound University at 2 p.m.
