U.S. Senate candidate makes stop in La Grande

Jo Rae Perkins, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, is an unabashed conservative but she believes she has what it takes to help break gridlock in Washington, D.C.

“I can reach across the aisle,” said Perkins during a campaign stop in La Grande Monday and Tuesday.

Perkins, who is from Albany, pointed out one of her biggest supporters is a lifelong Democrat, a woman she won over during a face-to-face discussion earlier this year.

“I listened to her concerns and we started talking,” Perkins said. “We found out where each of us was coming from and found out we have a lot in common.”

Perkins said that as a senator she would use the same approach.

“Instead of coming to loggerheads we can find out what we can agree on,” Perkins said.

Perkins, who is running for the senate seat now held by Democrat Jeff Merkley, began her talk during a Union County Republicans meeting by reading the oath of office all U.S. senators recite when they are sworn in, including the opening line which reads, “I do solemnly swear I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies.”

Perkins said many senators often do not uphold the oath they take because they vote for bills which extend the reach of the federal government beyond its constitutional limits.

“These men and women are making votes which violate the oath of office. They have the audacity to do this. This is an absolutely appalling thing to happen,” Perkins said.

Perkins said she would try to repeal the Affordable Care Act as a senator.

“Obamacare was not designed to succeed, it was designed to fail,” Perkins said.

She fears that Obamacare’s failure will lead the United States to a single-payer system like Canada and Great Britain have.

“Canada and Great Britain have shown us how horrible it is. Why do we think can do any better?” Perkins said.
