Hot shooting sparks EOU win

Olympia, Wash. — A spectacular shooting performance by Brittney Newcomb and her teammates fueled a great start to the Cascade Collegiate Conference schedule for the Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team.

Newcomb, who was one of four Mountaineers in double figures, finished with 32 points in the game. She shot 10-of-16 from the field, including 5-of-8 from behind the 3-point arc.

Nicole Redd finished with 19 points. Kassy Larson and Madeline Laan scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Mountaineers jumped out to a 12-3 lead following a Redd 3-point shot and a Laan lay-in.

The Geoducks trimmed the lead to six points, 63-57, with 8:19 left in the second half. But, Newcomb connected again from the field, and the Mountaineers pushed the lead back out to 10 points. The senior guard put the game away late in the second half, connecting on four straight attempts from behind the arc, pushing the lead to 81-66 with 4:34 left to play.

EOU shot 60 percent from the floor for the game, while holding Evergreen to 43 percent shooting.

Taylor Riley finished with a team-high 10 rebounds for the Mountaineers, and added seven points.

Brittany Gray led Evergreen with 19 points, while Sammi Clark finished with 17 points.

The Mountaineers will travel to Kirkland, Wash., to play Northwest University at 5:30 p.m. today.
