PREP SWIMMING: La Grande swimmers take second in opener

PENDLETON — The La Grande High School swim team took on Baker, Pendleton and Hermiston at Blue Mountain Community College Saturday in its first competition of the season.  

Both the boys and girls took second place with 94 and 61 points, respectively.  Pendleton won both the boys and girls overall competitions.  

Sophomores Abbey Felley and Hannah Roberts were double winners for La Grande. Felley took first in the 200 individual medley and the 400 meter freestyle, while Roberts was on top in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.  

Sophomores Keegan Dutto, Josh Ebel and Bryce Ebel all had first-place finishes. 

Dutto placed first in the 200 IM and second in the 400-meter freestyle.  Josh Ebel placed first in the 200 freestyle and second in the 100 breaststroke. Bryce Ebel took first in the 100 freestyle and was second by only 0.12 seconds in the 50 freestyle.  Senior Lian Neeley placed fourth in the 200 IM and senior Emmitt Ambert placed fourth in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle. 

Freshman Tony Clay placed second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 100 butterfly.  Sophomore Dean Ricker placed third in the 200 IM and fourth in the 100 meter butterfly.  Freshman Trevor Hoffman made his debut in high school swimming with a fourth place finish in the 200 freestyle.  

La Grande finished second in both the girls’ and boys’ 200 medley relays. Moriah Brown, Felley, Roberts and Lian Neeley swam to second place in 2 minutes, 30.28 second, while Keegan Dutto, the Ebels and Emmitt Ambert finished second in 2:06.63.  The boys’ 200 freestyle relays placed second (Clay, Ricker, Wyatt Perry and Josh Ebel) and third (Nic Corsini, Bryce Ebel, Hoffman and Ambert).

Class 5A Pendeton had 53 swimmers, while La Grande swam with only 16. The Tigers’ next competition is Saturday in Baker.
