WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Mountaineers clip Eagles

Brittney Newcomb led the her team in scoring for the second straight night, and the Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team used a 22-2 second-half run to pick up a conference win.

Newcomb scored a team-high 15 points during a 71-48 win against Northwest University Saturday, helping the Mountaineers improve to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. 

The Mountaineers led 33-24 at the half, and opened the second half on run pushing the lead to 55-26. Northwest failed to make a field goal during that run, which spanned 10 minutes.

The Eagles cut the lead to 60-42, using a 13-4 run with 3:38 left in the game, but didn’t get any closer.

Nikki Osborne finished with nine points and five rebounds. Taylor Riley had a team-high eight assists to go with seven points. 

Point guard Nicole Redd had a team-best seven rebounds, and scored seven points.

The EOU defense held the Eagles to 28 percent shooting from the floor.

Chanara Greene led Northwest with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Mountaineers return to action Friday at the Ker Classic hosted by Whitman College. EOU opens the tournament against Whitworth College at 6 p.m.
