Councilors note growth but plan for tough budget season in 2014

The La Grande City Council ended its last meeting of 2013 on a positive note.

“We’re surging,” said Mayor Daniel Pokorney, referring to a final plat the council approved at the Wednesday night meeting.

The city council approved two final plats, one of which involves the R and R Community Court subdivision.

City Planner Mike Boquist said the property owner of the duplexes had planned to eventually submit a subdivision application to make each duplex its own parcel.

“I didn’t expect this to come as quickly as it did, but the project has been very successful,” Boquist said. “The property owner has chosen to expedite their project.”

The planner said that project involves subdividing the duplexes for investment purposes.

The R and R and the other plat, a major land partition, are scheduled to go before the Union County Board of Commissioners Monday morning.

While councilors were happy to hear of growth, they also acknowledged the next budget season could be a difficult one.

Councilor John Lackey said in studying the city’s financials, the balance between revenues and expenditures needs to be seriously considered.

“I think it’s something we need to think about long term,” Lackey said. “We’re being forced, I think, to put a very tight rein on the next couple years from a fiscal standpoint.”

Also at the meeting, councilors approved awarding a bid to two vendors for about $72,000 worth of fitness equipment for the La Grande Fire Department. The equipment is primarily paid for by a grant, though it did require a 5 percent match.

Fire Chief Bruce Weimer said the expense was budgeted for.

“We anticipated this to a certain extent,” he said.

The equipment includes both cardio and strength training equipment that will replace existing equipment that had been donated to the department.

The city council will not meet again this year, but the council, City Manager Robert Strope and city staff will host a Holiday Open House from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
