WALLA WALLA, Wash. — A cold shooting first half sunk the Eastern Oregon women’s basketball team in a 78-65 loss to Whitman College during the second day of the Kim Evanger Raney Classic in Walla Walla, Wash.

The Mountaineers managed to shoot just 30 percent in the first half, falling behind 41-25 at the break.

After falling behind by 17 points in the second half, 64-47, EOU (10-4 overall) went on a 14-6 run to trim Whitman’s lead down to nine points, 70-61. However, the single-digit lead did not last as Tiffani Traver and Alysse Ketner hit back to back 3-pointers to put the Missionaries back on top, 76-61.

Eastern Oregon would not get any closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Brittney Newcomb led the Mountaineers with 23 points and Taylor Riley followed with 14.

Whitman’s Sarah Anderegg scored a game-high 32 points.

The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, hosting Southern Oregon University at 5:30 p.m. in Quinn Coliseum.
