Crash leaves one dead south of town

Mount Vernon woman killed following single vehicle accident on Highway 203 The accident occurred on Highway 203 south of La Grande around 9 p.m. Monday.  

 

The Oregon State Police are investigating a single vehicle crash Monday night that left one person dead.

The accident occurred on Highway 203 south of La Grande around 9 p.m. Monday. 

According to OSP Sgt. Kyle Hove, a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria driven by Lucille Swarthout, 87, of Mount Vernon was southbound on Highway 203 near milepost 10 when it traveled off the road. Swarthout’s vehicle when it traveled off the road. Swarthout’s vehicle rolled before coming to rest with Swarthout ejected adjacent to where the vehicle was found.

Hove said it is unclear what caused the vehicle to roll, since this section of highway is straight with narrow shoulders.

Hove said Swarthout was not wearing safety restraints at the time of the crash and air bags in the vehicle did deploy.

The OSP was assisted by deputies from the Union and Grant County Sheriff offices, Oregon Department of Transportation, the La Grande Fire Department and the Union Volunteer Fire Department Quick Response. 

Traffic was able to make it through in one of the two lanes during the duration of the investigation.
