Panthers breeze by depleted Cougars

The Imbler boys basketball team breezed by a depleted Wallowa team in the opening round of the La Grande Optimist Tournament Thursday.

The Cougars had six players on the bench due to the flu bug, and ran out of gas during a 58-22 win.

The Panthers led 12-2 after one quarter, and pulled down on the offensive throttle the final three quarters. 

Trace VanCleave finished with 10 points in the game, while Joe Griffin added nine points. Hunter VanLeuven added eight points in the fourth quarter off the bench.

Wallowa was led by senior Chandler Burns with seven points. Spencer Shelton added five points.

The Cougars played Joseph at 9:30 a.m. in the consolation bracket. The Panthers will play Dayville/Monument at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the semifinals.

Badgers run past Rockets

The Powder Valley Badgers cruised to a 71-36 win in the opening round of the La Grande Optimist Tournament Thursday against Pilot Rock.

Logan Allen led the way for the Badgers with 12 points. Tyler Robinson and Chace Dixon each scored 11 points  during the win. Marcus Pratt chipped in nine points.

Powder Valley led by five points, 18-13, after one quarter, but erupted for 32 points in the second quarter to pull away for good.

The Rockets were led by Dillon Fritz’s 12 points.

The Badgers will take on Union today at 4:30 p.m. in the semifinals. Pilot Rock played Cove at 12:30 p.m.
