A routine late night patrol led to a burglary arrest in downtown La Grande early Monday.

La Grande Police Department’s Sgt. John Shaul was patrolling the area around 1:15 a.m. when he noticed the front door at JC Penney had been smashed.

“He got out to do a little further investigating and realized the interior door was also smashed out,” said LGPD’s Lt. Derick Reddington.

At that point Shaul requested backup. More officers, deputies from the Union County Sheriff’s Office and two Oregon State Police troopers responded.

After securing the building, they did a search of the building, Reddington said.

“They noticed there were several bags of clothing on the first floor,” Reddington said.

They located 36-year-old John Rumbelow hiding in the basement of the building. He was taken into custody without incident and was charged with second-degree burglary and second-degree criminal mischief.

Police estimate Rumbelow had bagged up $1,300 worth of clothing. He also had $50 to $100 worth of clothing on his person, Reddington said. Police believe Rumbelow acted alone.

Reddington said the police department appreciates the help from the Union County Sheriff’s Office and the
Oregon State Police.

“It was excellent police work,” Reddington said. “Sgt. Shaul does fantastic work. When he observes issues on private property that look amiss to him, he will contact the property owners. He’s very proactive.”
