HOOD RIVER — The La Grande High School swim team had a very successful performance at the Hood River High School Invitational Swim Meet Saturday.

The boys team placed third overall behind Class 6A Gresham and Class 5A Pendleton. The Tigers had 10 male swimmers in the water, while both Gresham and Pendleton had more than 20. La Grande head coach Darren Dutto said that made the third-place finish fantastic relative to these much bigger teams.

The La Grande girls only swam with six girls this past weekend, but managed a seventh-place finish.

Dutto said his team was a little short staffed this weekend, but the girls really swam hard and scored good points for the effort.

On the girls side, senior Becca Haynes won both the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. Sophomore Hannah Roberts was second in both the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke races. Roberts’ freestyle was a particularly good swim, according to Dutto, because she knocked over a second off of her previous best time. Junior Shelby Baker was a strong second in the 200 Freestyle and 3rd in the 100 Freestyle. Lian Neeley, Heather Keniry and Sierra Smith all lodged season best times in their events. The 200 Medley Relay placed second overall.

For the boys, sophomore Bryce Ebel won both the 50 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly events. Bryce was the 4A state champion in the butterfly last year, and this was the first time swimming it this year. We have been a little tentative as he has had a shoulder injury. But this weekend proved that we are on the right path as he swum the 100 Fly almost a 1.5 seconds faster than at this time last year. The relay team consisting of Keegan Dutto, Josh Ebel, Emmitt Ambert, and Bryce Ebel won the 200 Freestyle Relay in a fantastic time. Sophomore Keegan Dutto swam a best time and achieved 2nd in the 200 Freestyle. Sophomore Josh Ebel had 2 third place swims in the 100 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke. Senior Emmitt Ambert, Sophomore Dean Ricker, and Freshmen Trevor Hoffman and Tony Clay all contributed in the scoring for the boys.

All in all, it was a great showing for the Tiger swim team. Our next meet will be here in La Grande this upcoming weekend, where we will be honoring our seniors.
