Mountaineers play their first home conference games

PARMA, Idaho — Led by six wrestlers in the finals, La Grande took home the first-place trophy at the Padilla Wrestling Tournament in Parma, Idaho, Saturday.

The Tigers finished with 243 team points, while Weiser, Idaho, came in second with 213 points.

Cole Rohan got things going, taking home the championship at 106 pounds. Rohan won a 2-1 decision against Heath Hartley of Nyssa.

“That’s a great outcome for Cole,” La Grande head coach Klel Carson said. “Heath is one of top wrestlers at that weight class. Cole beat him at the Rollie Lane Tournament, and to get him again this season is big.”

Taren Hardwick won the championship at 120 pounds. He defeated Kristian Claudio of Weiser 4-3 in the championship match.

Jon Gonzalez won by pinfall in his championship match at 126 pounds. The freshman pinned Cody Svedin of Melba 4:50 into the match.

Seth DeVinney beat out teammate Jared Neisse by a coin flip to determine the title at 132 pounds.

“They’re both champions in my book,” Carson said. “They both had excellent tournaments, and it was great to see them both make the finals.”

Ryan Middleton kept the wins by pinfall coming, subduing Lance Travis of New Plymouth, Idaho, with 31 seconds into the third round at 156 pounds.

Caleb Woodworth brought home the final title for the Tigers. Woodworth pinned Chase Rowan of New Plymouth with 60 seconds left in the match.

“It was great to have so many people win titles,” Carson said. “We couldn’t have won the team championship, though, without more people on the medal stand. It seemed like in each weight class we had a couple kids up there.”

Corey Issacson, Tyler Issacson and Dylan Reece each finished in second place. Nicolas Kavanaugh and David Jackman finished fourth.

La Grande will travel to McLoughlin High School Thursday for a 5 p.m. dual.
