Badgers win rematch with Panthers

NORTH POWDER —Speed and pressure fueled the Powder Valley boys basketball team’s win Saturday night.

The Badgers used their full-court press to jump out to a 23-1 lead against Joseph after one quarter, and finished with an 83-34 win.

Marcus Pratt had a game-high 20 points, while Jason Benites added 12 points. Brock Jones hit three 3-pointers, finishing with nine points.

Cayden DeLury led the Eagles with 12 points.

Back at full strength, and at home, the Powder Valley boys basketball team picked up a statement win against Imbler Friday night.

Quin Stephens returned after missing time with the team to lead the 77-47 win. Stephens scored 11 of his game-high 19 points in the third quarter.

In the last meeting, Jan. 11, Imbler picked up a 53-49 win. But this game looked, and nearly finished, the same way the first meeting did, a 77-48 win by the Badgers at the La Grande Optimist Christmas Classic Dec. 28.

Powder Valley pushed the lead to 20 points a minute into the third quarter, 43-23, and kept that cushion the rest of the game.

Tyler Robinson finished with 14 points, while Logan Allen added 12 points. Brock Jones scored 10 points.

Imbler was led by Trace VanCleave with 16 points. Luke Silbernagle and Eli Bowers each scored eight points.

Powder Valley (16-1 overall, 6-1 OOL) will host Pine Eagle at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Panthers bounce back to take down Spartans

IMBLER — A big night by sophomore Trace Vancleave helped the Imbler boys basketball team get back on track Saturday.

The Panthers picked up a 56-28 league win, led by Vancleave’s 24 points.

He went 9-of-20 from the field, and grabbed nine rebounds.

Kyle Johnson added 14 points for the Panthers, who stayed tied for first place in the league standings with the win.

Eli Bowers added eight points and eight rebounds.

Pine Eagle was led by Colter Marks and Jess Swanson. Each scored eight points.

Imbler will travel to Cove for a 7:30 p.m. game Friday.

Leopards pick up a pair of league wins 

COVE –– The Cove boys basketball beat the Wallowa 41-36 in an Old Oregon League matchup Saturday. 

The Leopards (12-6 overall, 5-2 OOL) pulled ahead in the first quarter. The Cougars (2-15 overall, 1-6 OOL) managed a strong scoring streak early in the fourth quarter, closing the gap to four points. 

The Leopards widened the gap for the win in the closing minute of the game. 

Cove’s high scorer was Derrick Murchison who added 15 points, including one 3-pointer. Brandon McGilvray scored seven points, and Bailey Hill finished with five. 

Cove beat Joseph 48-46 in an Old Oregon League game Friday. 

Colton DeMeerleer led his team’s scoring effort with 18 points, including two 3-point shots. Murchison scored 14 points, and also hit two 3-pointers. McGilvray finished with nine points. 

Cove will play at home against Imbler starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday. 

Bobcats keep pace with top conference teams

HEPPNER –– The Union boys basketball (11-8 overall, 8-3 BMC) beat Heppner (11-8 overall, 5-7 BMC) 55-52 in a Blue Mountain Conference match Saturday. 

Coach Brett Dunten said they won at the charity stripe. 

This was their fourth consecutive conference win. 

Ty Coon lead the Bobcats finishing with 20 points, making four 3-point shots and 2-of-5 free throws. Kenneth Sipp also added 10 points, making two 3-pointers and 2-of-2 free throws. 

The Bobcats will face Weston-McEwen in Union starting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. 

Huskies can’t slow down Tiger-Scots Saturday 

ELGIN — Elgin couldn’t stop Weston-McEwen to get a conference win. The Tigers-Scots limited Elgin in the first half, grabbing a 32-28 lead at halftime. Weston-McEwen went on to win 58-44 Saturday.

Jake Burgess led the Huskies with 15 points, while Stephen Howes had 10 points. 

Linton McAllister led the Tiger-Scots with 15 points. Jarett Bousquet also helped Weston-McEwen get a win, getting 14 points.

“I feel like we played a good first half. Our seniors and starting crew need to step-up,” Elgin head coach Casey Hallgarth said. 

Friday night in John Day the Prospectors got a 72-41 win over Elgin. Grant Union started to run away with the game at halftime as they led 44-14.

Jake Burgess led the Huskies with 16 points.Carson Reid helped out with eight points. Mitch Moulton led the Prospectors with 20 points. Kody Nelson helped Grant Union get a win with 15 points.

“Before the game we talked about them not having a big first half,” Hallgarth said. 

Grant Union had scored 44 points in the first half alone.  

Elgin will play a conference game at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Enterprise.
