BRIEFLY: Salmon program unfolds in Joseph

JOSEPH — Ian Wilson of Nez Perce Tribal Fisheries will give a presentation on salmon restoration efforts by the tribe, with a focus on the Lostine River from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday. 

The program will be aimed at “pre-ski” middle schoolers — people are welcome to come in ski gear on the way to Ferguson Ridge Ski Area — but it will be interesting to anyone who follows the fish in Wallowa County. 

The program is free and open to the public. 

Oregon Green Free meets Saturday

The local chapter of Oregon GreenFree meets at noon Saturday at the Integrated Services Building, 1607 Gekeler. Lunch this week will be a spaghetti contest with a $25 cash prize. Oregon GreenFree is an Oregon Medical Marijuana Program’s resource center committed to providing information, education and a sense of unity for those who choose to use medicinal cannabis.

Historical society meets Saturday

The Union County Historical Society will meet Saturday at the log cabin at the fairgrounds. The meeting begins at noon with a potluck. Guest speaker is Gene Hardy, who will talk about the Hardy family of Elgin history. 

A short business meeting will follow. The public is invited to attend.

Urban renewal commission meets 

The Urban Renewal Advisory Commission regular session will take place at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the second floor conference room of City Hall. 

Project updates and a budget review are among the agenda items.

Valentine’s Social and Dance set Saturday

A Community Valentine’s Social and Dance will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Union County Senior Center, 1504 Albany St., featuring the music of Chinook Winds from Pendleton.

Admission is $3 for singles and $5 for couples. People can dress up or not — their choice. The event promises prizes and lots of fun. There will be a finger food potluck. People are asked to bring their favorites.

Soil and water district sets meeting

The Union Soil and Water Conservation District will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Ag Service Center, 10507 N. McAlister Road, to discuss the annual budget, state of the district and conservation projects.

Kids Night Out set Saturday 

Kids Night Out sponsored by the Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team, for kindergarten through eighth grade, will run from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Quinn Coliseum. Cost is $10 per person. 

Participants need proper shoes and comfortable clothing for recreational play, and participants are required to be signed in and out at the door. 

Kids can register at the door beginning at 5:40 p.m. up through 8:30 p.m.

February meeting of PFLAG is Sunday 

The February meeting for PFLAG (Parents, Friends and Family of Lesbians and Gays) will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Shelter From the Storm, 1111 Fifth St. 

Items on the agenda include nominations for one of the officer positions, setting a date and location for the summer potluck, a discussion on the possibility of a booth at the farmers market and
other fundraising possibilities.
