Numerous crashes were reported on I-84 Tuesday morning. (OSP photo) 9:15 a.m. UPDATE: I-84 Eastbound is now open to single lane travel near milepost 205, 4 miles west of Pendleton. A semi crash had blocked both lanes earlier this morning. Travelers are cautioned to expect hazardous road conditions (fog/black ice) east and west of Pendleton and throughout Northeast Oregon, and to use extreme caution. All vehicles are currently required to use chains or traction tires in areas between Pendleton and La Grande (check TripCheck.com for update chain requirements). If possible, motorists are encouraged to postpone travel until conditions improve.

Freezing rain and icy road conditions were factors in several Tuesday morning traffic crashes along I-84 in the Pendleton area. One of these crashes involved a FedEx trailer that split open, spilling general freight and causing lane closures for eastbound traffic.

According to Senior Trooper Dan Chichester, at about 6 a.m., a Fed Ex truck pulling two trailers was eastbound on I-84 near milepost 205 when the trailers began to jackknife. Another commercial truck traveling behind crashed into one of the trailers, splitting it open and spilling its contents along the freeway. Neither driver was injured.

OSP, ODOT and FedEx representatives responded to the scene. The eastbound lanes were closed until emergency responders were able to get one lane open. The left eastbound lane is now open for traffic while workers continue to pick up debris and clear the scene.

Several other traffic crashes occurred in the general area as well as east of Pendleton during the night that affected Interstate 84 and area roads.

The parking lot at Flying J Truck Plaza is crammed with trucks this morning as drivers wait for Interstate 84 to re-open.

The eastbound lanes were closed around 6:20 a.m. this morning because of a crash and semi-truck blocking both lanes, according to a release from the Oregon Department of Transportation.

The westbound lanes were closed about 8:50 p.m. Monday following a multi-vehicle crash near Meacham that happened about 7:40 p.m. Monday.

There are also several disabled semi-trucks in the Meacham and Cabbage Hill areas, the result of ice and dense fog, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.

The westbound lanes were initially closed at La Grande, then the closure was extended to Baker City and to Ontario.
