Colton brings home runner-up finish for Union/Cove

PORTLAND — Union/Cove’s Daniel Colton was the area’s lone 2A/1A wrestler to advance into the championships at the state wrestling tournament at Memorial Coliseum in Portland Saturday.

That also gave his team the best showing, with Union/Cove finishing 11th with 27 points —16 coming from Colton.

Enterprise/Joseph finished with 22 points, placing 14th.

Imbler finished with four points, while Elgin was shut out.

The Union/Cove senior fell to Culver’s Marco Retano 10-8 in the championship match at 113 pounds.

Colton defeated Kyle Bateman of Monroe by fall with 30 seconds left in the second round to move into the semifinals. Colton then picked up a 4-2 decision against Ricky Esparza of Glendale to move into the  finals.

Teammate Chad Witty, fell in the semifinals at 170 pounds,. He lost by a 10-4 decision. Witty bounced back to defeat Enterprise/Joseph’s Daniel Parker by fall with four seconds left in the second round. In the third-place match, Witty lost to Lowell’s Gabriel Anderson by major decision, 8-0.

Witty opened the tournament by defeating Esteban Gutierrez of Culver 54 seconds into the second round.

Enterprise/Joseph was led by fourth-place finishes from  Matthew Staigle and Wyatt Warnock.

Staigle dropped his semifinal match to Angus Swan of Oakland by an 8-4 decision at 195 pounds. 

He bounced back to defeat Tyler Tandy of Imbler in the consolation semifinals by fall. Gold Beach wrestler Thomas Keeler defeated Staigle 8-3 to end the tournament.

Staigle opened the tournament against Calvin Bradberry of Monroe and won by fall with 9 seconds left in the match.

Enteprise/Joseph’s Wyatt Warnock fell in the semifinals to Joseph Ballard by major decision, 14-3, at 220 pounds. He bounced back to defeat Michael Casey of Crane in overtime 6-4. Overtime didn’t go his way in a battle for third place against Killian Gregg of Santiam. Gregg caught Warnock first to win 11-7 in overtime.

He opened the tournament with a win by fall against Brennon Mestas of Bonanza. Warnock secured a pin at the 2:56 mark.

Jared Wilcox (160 pounds) and Daniel Parker, (170) of Enterprise/Joseph each fell in the opening round, but moved on with a win in the consolation bracket.

Wilcox lost his next match 11-4. Parker defeated Logan Patterson of Knappa 5-4, before losing to Witty.

On the opening day, Union/Cove’s Josh Devore fell in his first two matches at 113 pounds. The sophomore lost his final match to Shawn Richardson of Oakridge 13-5.

Elgin’s Damian Hernandez, (132)  and Jaydon McKay, (152) both fell in their opening two matches of the tournament.
