Lady Cats’ hot start continues Saturday

UNION — The quick start to the season continued for Union/Cove during a doubleheader Saturday, picking up a pair of non-league wins.

The LadyCats improved to 8-0 on the season, capping the day with an 11-3 win against Elgin/Imbler. 

The Ravens got on the board first off a throwing error in the top of the first. But, Jaiden Wright allowed just two runs the rest of the game. She allowed seven hits, while striking out seven and walking two.

The LadyCats nearly ended the game in the fifth by scoring five runs, taking a 10-2 lead. But, Keesha Sarman grounded out with runners on second and third to end the inning. 

Union/Cove’s Delanie Kohr had the hot bat. The freshman went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in a run. Kindra Moore, Kourtnee Marriott, Sarman and Wright also picked up a pair of hits.

Karigan Wilhelm hit a solo home run for the Ravens.

Wilhelm took the loss, giving up 10 runs, eight earned, on 10 hits in four innings of work. 

Wright got the offense going in the opening game of the day, a 13-3 win over Burns.

Wright hit the first pitch of the game over the fence, and followed with another solo shot in the second inning. She finished the day 3-for-3 with three RBIs, hitting a run-scoring single in the third innings. 

Sarman also had a perfect game at the plate with a 3-for-3 day.

Carsyn Roberts and Moore each added two hits. 

Kohr picked up the win on the mound. She allowed three runs on one hit in four innings of work. Kohr struck out four and walked six. 

Ally Sutcliffe took the loss for Burns. The freshman gave up 13 runs, 10 earned, in four innings of work. She struck out four and walked six.

Union/Cove will open the district schedule against Weston-McEwen/Griswold at 11 p.m. Saturday at home.
