The City of La Grande has hired a new parks and recreation director. Stu Spence will begin his work as the department director April 28.

Spence has a degree in parks and recreation from Central Washigton University and started his career with an internship for the Boys & Girls Club of King County near Seattle as a teen camp director. He was then hired as a regular staff member and worked his way up to senior program director.

In 2002, Spence was given the opportunity to return home to Ellensburg, Wash. as the youth programs coordinator in charge of the local community and youth center. In 2008, he took a job as Woodburn's recreation services manager. There he established new programs and events like pee-wee sports, an annual Easter egg hunt and more. Last year Spence was awarded the Oregon Recreation and Parks Association New Professional Award for parks and recreation leadership and dedication.
