Union County's Greg Barreto likely will be heading to Salem next year to represent Oregon's 58th District.
Barreto defeated John Turner, of Pendleton, in the Republican primary last night, taking Union and Wallowa counties in a landslide. Barreto, a Cove resident and La Grande business owner, celebrated with family, friends and supporters Tuesday night in Cove.
"I'm humbled," he told the group of about 100.
Turner, a former Blue Mountain Community College president and Marine colonel, touted his experience working in higher education and on the Port of Umatilla. Toward the end of the race, he was criticized for supporting a measure that would allow those who cannot prove residency to obtain a driver's license.
Barreto, owner of Barreto Manufacturing, campaigned on bringing jobs back to the region from a business-minded point of view. He faces another Cove resident and La Grande business owner, Heidi Van Schoonhoven, the Democratic nominee, in the general election.
