SPIRITUAL HIGHLIGHTS: Potluck and elders’ meeting follow service


LA GRANDE — The service at Faith Lutheran Church in La Grande will begin at 10 a.m. The sermon will expound upon Mark 1:29-39, which tells of an active time of Jesus’ earthly ministry of healing, casting out demons and preaching. He retreated to pray and the disciples came to him and said, “Everyone is looking for you.” Humankind benefits from what Jesus has to offer. After the service is the First Sunday potluck followed by an elders’ meeting.

Next Sunday, Feb. 11, Faith Lutheran’s annual cakewalk. The proceeds are distributed by the women’s Koinonia group for mission support.

Seminar: ‘Journey Through the Bible’

LA GRANDE — The Saturday service at the La Grande Seventh-day Adventist Church will be held at 11 a.m. Pastor Mike will explore Jesus Christ’s power to transform those who follow him from the inside outward, preparing them to live with him forever.

Those interested in going on a “Journey Through the Bible” are invited to a Saturday morning seminar that will discover and rediscover the great people, events and themes in scripture beginning with Genesis. Pastor Mike will lead the class in the seminar room from 9:30 a.m. to 10:40 a.m.

Quilts will be donated to World Relief

LA GRANDE — Zion Lutheran Church in La Grande will worship at 9:30 a.m. with Pastor Colleen Nelson. A children’s class is available during the sermon. Fellowship and fair trade coffee follow the service.

Ruth Zemke will host a Bible study at her home, 480 Esther in Imbler, at 7 p.m. Monday. On Tuesday, the Quilters will meet at 9 a.m. to work on quilts that will be given to Lutheran World Relief.

Guest speaker tells of helping children in South Africa

COVE — Grace Community Lutheran Church in Cove will celebrate God’s word with a special worship service at 10 a.m. Pastor Carl’s sermon title is “Wings Like Eagles,” taken from Mark 1. Adult Sunday school begins at
9 a.m. After the service during fellowship time, a guest from the Village South Africa project will speak about his mission to help vulnerable children in that country. A potluck will also be served. The community is welcome to attend the presentation and potluck. Questions regarding the event can be directed to Bob at 541-568-4230.

Congregants encouraged to attend annual meeting

LA GRANDE — St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in La Grande will gather at 9 a.m. for Holy Eucharist. The church’s annual meeting will begin immediately after the service in the parish hall. All congregants are encouraged to attend.

Sunday evening, the book club will meet at 6 p.m. in the parish hall. Centering Prayer is offered Tuesdays and Morning Prayer from the Book of Common Prayer is offered Thursdays; both services are held at 8:30 a.m. in the chapel. A midweek Eucharist is offered Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m., also in the chapel.

Cove Methodist Church collects items for food pantry

COVE — Rev. Ernest Smith will be at the Cove Methodist Church and will serve Communion to those gathered at the 9 a.m. service. Following the service is a coffee fellowship.

During the week, Fresh Food Alliance offers free perishable food every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The church also hosts the Cove Food Pantry on the fourth Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Food Pantry focus for next time is household and personal care items.
