LA GRANDE — Foreign Film Friday for adults is the second Friday of the month, September through May, at 7 p.m. at Cook Memorial Library in La Grande. The film for April 13 is “Theeb” from Jordan. Set in 1916 Arabia, the movie follows a Bedouin boy’s treacherous journey across the desert. The film is in Arabic with English subtitles. Refreshments will be provided.
Chief Joseph Days Queen chosen Saturday
JOSEPH — The 73rd annual Chief Joseph Days Coronation will take place April 14. The second tryouts and the final riding competition begin at 11 a.m. at the Harley Tucker Rodeo Grounds, giving Princesses Deidre Schreiber and Rylee Goller another chance to show off their riding skills. The Coronation Dinner at the Joseph Community Center, 102 E. First St., begins with a social hour at 5:30 p.m., followed by a tri-tip dinner by Apple Flat Catering at 6:30 p.m. and the queen’s coronation at 8:30 p.m. Live music and dancing begin at 9 p.m.
Tickets for the dinner are $20 (includes cover charge for dance). Admission to the dance only is $5 at the door at 9 p.m. Tickets are available at the Chief Joseph Days Rodeo Office and The Sports Corral in Joseph, and at Community Bank in Joseph, Enterprise and Wallowa.
Union VFW hosts breakfast, yard sale
UNION — VFW High Valley Post 4060 is having a breakfast and yard sale April 14 at 518 N. Main St., Union. A $7 breakfast featuring ham and cheese omelets, biscuits and gravy, and coffee and juice will be served from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The yard sale opens at 8 a.m.
Island City Elementary invites community to Friday’s carnival
ISLAND CITY — The annual Island City Elementary School carnival will be open from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. April 13 at the school. The community is invited to come enjoy the variety of carnival games and silent auction items. All proceeds go to support the school.
County commissioner, DA candidates ready to answer questions
LA GRANDE — The Observer and the Union County Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring a forum April 12 for those running for Union County Commissioner and Union County District Attorney. The county-wide forum begins at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Blue Mountain Conference Center, 404 12th St., La Grande. The public is encouraged to come with questions for the candidates.
Due to the forum, the Chamber office will have limited hours April 12, and the office will be closed April 13.
