Elgin High School’s next principal will not need to spend any time familiarizing herself with its campus, staff or students.

The Elgin School Board voted earlier this week to name Superintendent Dianne Greif principal of Elgin High School starting July 1. Greif, who is also currently the principal of Stella Mayfield Elementary School, will continue serving as superintendent but will step down from her position as grade school principal.

“We think she is doing a very good job for the school district,” said Elgin School Board chair Shelley Burgess.

Burgess said she believes Greif will do an excellent job as high school principal and will bring added continuity to the position because she knows its students and staff and has strong ties to the school district and community.

Greif is completing her seventh year as Stella Mayfield principal and third year as Elgin superintendent. A 1979 graduate of EHS, her Elgin roots run deep. She also taught middle school math at Stella Mayfield for 17 years before becoming the school’s principal.

The educator will succeed Rob Shell as EHS principal. Shell will become the next principal of Weston-McEwen High School in Weston July 1. Shell is finishing his second year as EHS’s principal and has been with the Elgin School District for almost eight years. He taught social studies at EHS for six years before becoming the school’s principal.
