Armed with an infrared heat sensor, City of Union firefighters and public works staff are making significant progress against an underground fire in Union that continues to burn in a field at 10th and Arch streets.
“We have made a big dent in the fire,” said Paul Phillips, the lead employee in the City of Union’s public works staff.
The fire is now at least 350 feet from any structures and is not posing an immediate threat to any buildings, Phillips said. A week ago the fire was within 200 feet of some structures.
