Union library levy passes

The Union Carnegie Public Library received a big boost from the community it serves Tuesday.

Union voters narrowly approved a five-year option levy for the library by a vote of 342 to 327 in a mail election.

The option levy will raise about $118,000 a year, enough to fund the library's proposed 2018-19 operating budget.

"I'm so happy and so proud of the support we received from our community for the library,'' said Louise Shelden, the library's director.

The option levy will cost property owners about $1.21 for each $1,000 of assessed property value. This means the owner of a $100,000 home will pay $121 a year for the levy.
