LA GRANDE — Eastern Oregon University and the GO STEM (science, technology, electronics and math) Hub will put on a Family STEM Night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 1 at La Grande Middle School. This event will be different than in years past and its stations will be facilitated by EOU students and GO STEM partners. La Grande Parks and Recreation, Blue Mountain Conservancy, Northeast Oregon Area Health Education Center and the EOU Chemistry Club will also conduct hands-on activities for students.

Want to learn about beekeeping?

LA GRANDE — A free and informal gathering for current and potential beekeepers will be held at the OSU Extension Service Conference Room, 10507 N. McAlister Rd., Island City, at 10 a.m. March 3. This is an opportunity to learn more about bees, learn about the Oregon Master Beekeeper Program (OMBP) and network with fellow beekeepers in Union County. Author to speak Saturday

LA GRANDE — Local author M. F. Lorson will speak at Cook Memorial Library in La Grande at 1 p.m. March 3. Lorson is a children’s librarian in Eastern Oregon. She will talk briefly about her recently published book for young adults then will focus primarily on her experience writing with co-authors across the country and how publishing has changed in the past 10 years. Her books will be available for purchase at this free event in the library’s Community Room.

Trap shoot registration discount offered until March 9

LA GRANDE — The EOU Trapshooting Club is hosting its first annual Shamrock Shoot March 17 at the
La Grande Gun Club. The field of competition is open to students in 6th-12th grade and promises awards for top performers in a range of categories. There will also be competition categories for parents and coaches. Spectators are welcome, and campus tours will be available for visiting students.

The Trap Club will also host special games and practice rounds March 16 at the La Grande Gun Club. La Grande School Board meets March 7

LA GRANDE — The Board of Directors of the La Grande School District will have a special board meeting and work session at 7 p.m. March 7 in the District Office Conference Room, 1305 N Willow St. A time is set aside for public comment. The work session will include reports on wraparound services, mental health, and bond add-back and HVAC.

Take driver safety class, get a discount on auto insurance

LA GRANDE — There will be an AARP Smart Driver driver safety class on March 24 at Grande Ronde Hospital. The class will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with an hour for lunch and is open to all ages. Cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Those who complete the course are eligible for a discount on their auto insurance. Trade school scholarships available

BAKER CITY — OTEC members and immediate family interested in attending a trade school are encouraged to fill out a scholarship application form, now available at Up to $2,500 will be awarded toward the cost of attending an accredited trade school. The scholarship award must be used in the next cycle of enrollment. The qualifications for this scholarship match the chosen trade school’s qualifications. Applications are due no later than 5 p.m. May 1. Scholarships are funded by interest from member-owner unclaimed capital credits and do not affect rates.

Union County PEO Tri-Chapter Scholarship available to senior

The 2018-2019 Union County PEO Tri-Chapter Scholarship is now open for applications. The $3,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior girl who will be attending Eastern Oregon University. Scholarship applications are available at each of the Union County high schools by contacting your high school counselor. Applications are evaluated for academic achievement, community service, financial need and commitment to higher education. The scholarship is funded by the three local chapters of PEO, a philanthropic organization dedicated to the education of women. The deadline for submitting an application is March 31.
