KEIZER — Union County’s Junior Little League all-star softball District 3 champions got off to a good start in the Oregon State Tournament with a 14-7 win over District 8 Champion Illinois Valley on Saturday at the Keizer Sports Complex in Keizer.

Union County, guided by manager Peggy Nowak, then met powerhouse District 4 champion Tillamook in a second-round game Sunday. In a preview of what could possibly be the matchup in Tuesday’s state championship game,
Tillamook overpowered Union County for a lopsided 22-8 win.

“We trailed 10-3 after five innings, and then I switched pitchers in the sixth. I’m not sure if that was the right call or not,” Nowak said. “This was our first loss of the year, so hopefully we’ll bounce back. We’ll learn a lot from this and we’ll recover from it and hopefully our bats will be on fire in Monday’s game. Our pitchers and all our players will be well rested and hopefully we’ll win and set up a rematch with Tillamook on Tuesday.”
