Eastern nets a sweep on road


The No. 13 Eastern Oregon volleyball team survived an upset scare from Evergreen State Friday, rallying for a 20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 15-11 win over the Geoducks, then swept No. 25 Northwest Saturday, 26-24, 25-14, 25-22, four its fourth straight win in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

Friday

EOU 3, Evergreen State 2: Amanda Miller had 17 kills to lead five Mountaineers in double figures as EOU took the final two sets to stave off the Geoducks’ upset bid.

Eastern used a 9-2 run in the final set to pull away. Isabelle Statkus, who had 10 kills, broke a 4-all tie with back-to-back kills to start the run. Megan Bunn had three kills during the rally, the last of which gave EOU an 11-6 lead, and an Evergreen error capped the run and put EOU up by seven. Evergreen pulled no closer than four the rest of the way, with Miller putting down the final kill to end the match.

In addition to Miller’s big night, Madisen Garlie had 14 kills and seven blocks, Emily Nay had 13 kills and Hailee Ackerman recorded 10 kills.

EOU also had three players in double figures in assists and in digs. Madison Pilon dished out 27 assists, Sarah Carpenter had 18 and Abby Smith chipped in 10. Meanwhile, Kiley McMurtrey collected 27 digs, Aspen Christiansen had 17 and Malia Mills added 14.

Saturday

EOU 3, Northwest 0: Miller led the offensive attack for the second straight night with 15 kills as EOU completed its road sweep of the Washington schools.

Bunn and Ackerman each added 10 kills for the Mountaineers. Bunn also had a team-high six blocks. Garlie added eight kills and five blocks in the win.

The defense again had three players in double figures in digs — McMurtrey (17), Mills (14) and Christiansen (10). Pilon, matched up against her sister, Northwest setter Morgan Pilon, led the way with 34 assists. Smith added 14 assists.

EOU (11-4 overall, 5-1 CCC) hosts Northwest Christian Friday.
