Tigers see season end in quarterfinals

La Grande unable to hold 13-0 lead, falls to Marshfield, 24-21

La Grande's best season since 2005 has come to an end.

Marshfield scored 24 straight second-half points, including 21 in the fourth quarter, to rally from a 13-0 halftime deficit on its way to a 24-21 victory over the Tigers in the Class 4A quarterfinals Friday night in Coos Bay.

The Tigers staged one final last-ditch effort after the Pirates took a 24-13 lead with 2:07 to play, scoring on a 1-yard run by Andrew Peasley and getting the subsequent two-point conversion to cut the deficit to three with 33 seconds left. But La Grande was unable to recover the ensuing onside kick, and Marshfield ran out the clock.

La Grande scored two first-quarter touchdowns on receptions of 64 and 2 yards by G.T. Blackman — the second coming after an interception by Lincoln Clark — for a 13-0 lead.

That advantage held until halftime, and Marshfield added a third-quarter field goal to cut the deficit to 10 entering the final quarter.

That's when the Pirates' offense, which entered averaging 44.4 points per game, took off. A 3-yard run by Devin Benson made the score 13-10, and Tristan Lemmons raced in from 39 yards — one play after Marshfield recovered a fumble — to give the Pirates the lead for good at 17-13 lead.

The Tigers, who were in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2005, finish with an overall mark of 8-3. Marshfield, which stayed undefeated at 10-0 will face Ontario in the state semifinals next weekend.
