Cove senior dinner served up Friday

Imnaha wolves kill sheep in rural Joseph

JOSEPH – The owner of a small band of sheep in rural Joseph discovered a dead ewe within his paddock.A fresh snow had fallen overnight and wolf tracks were observed in the area of the dead animal and the paddock.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife biologists examined the ewe Thursday in Upper Prairie Creek which was partially consumed and wolf predation was suspected.

The investigation revealed multiple, large, pre-mortem bite wounds. All tooth punctures and bite wounds observed were clearly a result of large canine teeth.

Historian addresses Brown Bag Lunch

JOSEPH – Special guest for the Tuesday Brown Bag Lunch at the Josephy Center for Arts and Culture, 403 N. Main St. in Joseph, is Ryan Dearinger, historian and chair of the History Department at Eastern Oregon University.

Dearinger will talk about the Civil War and also about the Borderlands and the West. The program is loosely tied to Fishtrap’s Big Read of Charles Portis’ “True Grit,”

a novel set in the borderlands and Indian Territory in

the 1870s.

Emergency preparedness is focus

Emergency preparedness is the focus of a gathering at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Grande Ronde Retirement Residence. Rebecca Vaughn of the American Red Cross will present “Together We Prepare” as part of the Be Red Cross Ready Preparedness Program.

People can learn to protect themselves and their family by planning ahead to cope with disaster. The areas address will be Build a Kit, Make a Plan and Be Informed. For more information, call 541-963-4700.

Cove City Council meets Tuesday

COVE – The City of Cove will hold its regular council meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cove City Hall, 504 Alder. The wastewater project is among the items on the agenda.

VFW Post and auxiliary meets

Mount Emily VFW Post 2990 and Women’s Auxiliary meets the first Tuesday of each month at 10 Depot Street, upstairs, at 6:30 p.m., for a potluck supper, followed by a general meeting at

Parenting with Love and Logic class starts

Parenting with Love and Logic, a free class sponsored by the Union County Family Law Advisory Council, will begin Tuesday. The class will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays for seven sessions at the La Grande Middle School library. The facilitator is Mary Lu Pierce. To register, call

Child care is provided, but people are asked to register their children.

The class offers parenting ideas applicable to all ages of children.

Those attending will learn helpful ideas for setting limits for children, avoiding power struggles, taking the anger out of discipline and handling chores, allowances, homework and mealtimes.

People will practice strategies to take the frustration and anger out of parenting; end arguing, manipulation and power struggles; handle sibling rivalry and conflicts between peers, help kids learn responsible behavior, set limits and minimize conflicts, and reinforce and celebrate parenting success.

Improvement district holds annual meeting

JOSEPH – Wallowa Valley Improvement District No. 1 will hold its election and annual meeting at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at the American Legion Hall in Joseph.

Union seniors gather for turkey dinner

UNION – The Union senior meal will be served at noon Tuesday at the United Methodist Church. On the menu is a turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

Pesticide applicator training offered

The 2014 OSU Extension Northeast Oregon private pesticide applicator pre-exam training will take place soon.
