NORTH POWDER — Nobody was injured early Tuesday morning in a house fire four miles west of North Powder on Ellis Road.

The fire, reported at about 12:20 a.m. , destroyed the home, which had a basement and two stories above it.

"(The home) was a complete loss," said La Grande Rural Fire Chief Larry Wooldridge.

A family was in the home when the fire broke out but everyone escaped.

About 30 firefighters from North Powder, La Grande Rural, Imbler, Haines and Baker Rural fire departments combatted the blaze.

It took firefighters about two hours to contain the blaze and they were at the fire for about five hours.

"It was pretty bad," Wooldridge said.

He said the fire was difficult to fight because of the size of the house and its location, which was far from any hydrants. All water had to be brought in by tender trucks.

North Powder Fire Department has not returned phone calls for comment.
