Former lifeguard McKayla Nitz, 22, of La Grande, has stepped into her new role as La Grande Parks and Recreation Department Supervisor based out of the office adjacent to Pioneer Park.
“I am very community oriented, and I’m so excited to be given the opportunity to be in a position (that) allows me to serve my community,” Nitz said. “I love the Grande Ronde Valley, and I bought a house here about a year ago, so I’m planted here.”
Nitz is a 2017 graduate of Eastern Oregon University with a double major in music and theater. She has lived in La Grande for five years and spent the last three years working for the City of
La Grande as a lifeguard at the Veterans’ Memorial Pool.
At times, Nitz worked with Parks and Recreation in other capacities since the pool is an integral part of the department.
“I was pretty involved with helping aquatic superintendent Teresa Roberts run (events) like our dive-in movie, floating pumpkin patch and floating Easter egg hunt,” she said. “Those were all really fun and part of my favorite things working with the pool.”
Before she came to La Grande, Nitz lived in Helix, where she and her sister ran the Parks and Rec program for a couple of summers.
When the supervisor’s position opened up in La Grande, Nitz applied for the full-time position because it felt like a natural transition for her.
