ELGIN — A new home may be in the future for Elgin’s city hall.

The City of Elgin is looking into the possibility of purchasing the W.C. Construction building at 815 Hemlock St. as the new location for its offices.

“We are in negotiations with W.C. Construction,” said Elgin Mayor Allan Duffy.

Duffy emphasized that everything is very preliminary.

“It is just out there,” he said. “There is nothing solid.”

The W.C. Construction building could become available because the owners are planning to retire, Duffy said.

The W.C. Construction building is substantially bigger than Elgin’s city hall office building, offering room that is badly needed, Duffy said.

“We are really in need of space,” said the mayor.

He added that the W.C. Construction building has a big shop area. This would allow city hall and the city’s public works department to be at the same site. Presently Elgin’s public works is housed in the city’s old fire department building, several blocks from city hall, which is at 180 N. Eighth Ave., just north of the Elgin Opera House.

“(Moving to the W.C. Construction building) would allow us to have everything together but the library,” Duffy said.

Duffy said that once the city has some firm numbers regarding the possible purchase of the building, a proposal will be presented to the city council. Should the city council decide to move forward, a hearing will be conducted to take public input on the proposal. The council would then vote on whether to make the purchase and the move.

Should the City of Elgin purchase the W.C. Construction building, it would have more space than it would need. This would mean the city would have the option of leasing some of the space, Duffy said.

The mayor said that if the city were to move its offices, there is a chance that the office building the city now occupies and owns could serve as a site for Elgin’s museum. The museum previously was located in the Elgin Opera House but had to move out several years ago because of space issues, and it has not had a home since then.
