Smokejumpers were released Thursday from the 1,000-acre Buck Fire in Hells Canyon, fire officials said.

Nathan Goodrich, fire management officer for the Wallowa-Whitman North Zone, said the 20-member ZigZag Hotshots will remain on the fire throughout the weekend in anticipation of hotter and drier conditions where temperatures could easily reach 100.

Helicopter traffic over Enterprise was steady Thursday as the fire attack continued to be largely an air show.

Goodrich said there was a flare up Wednesday night in nearly vertical canyons that burned grass and threatened one edge of the fire line. Crews waited until daylight Thursday morning for help from air tankers and helicopters to tamp down the blaze.

The fire is burning between Somers Point and Temperance Creek, approximately 22 miles east of Wallowa. The entire blaze is in the Hells Canyon Wilderness.

Lightning strikes ignited the fire on Monday.
