ENTERPRISE — Wallowa County is poised to enter a lawsuit in defense of the U.S. Forest Service’s Lostine River Corridor Public Safety Project.

This spring, two environmental groups sued the Forest Service in U.S. District Court in Pendleton to try to stop a project that USFS officials say is needed to protect the public from trees in danger of falling, and to reduce the risk of a large wildfire along the Lostine River Road.

In their bi-monthly meeting July 10 the Wallowa County commissioners voted to ask the federal court to allow the county to intervene in the lawsuit. If the request is granted and the judge determines the county’s involvement would be effective, the county would participate in all proceedings and have the right to appeal.
