The La Grande Rifle and Pistol Club’s annual turkey shoot will be held Nov. 5 at the club range, 56758 Highway 244. Registration opens at 9 a.m. and shooting begins at 10. Shooters may use any center-fire hunting rifle with or without a scope, muzzle-loading rifles, or any center-fire muzzle-loading pistol with iron sights. Cost is $15. Annual church bazaars held tomorrow
The La Grande Presbyterian Church Holiday Bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Nov 4 at the Friendship Center on Spring Avenue. Items for sale include homemade donuts, themed baskets, produce, baked goods, books and crafts.
Also on Saturday will be the First Christian Church’s Fall Harvest Bazaar, from
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fresh cinnamon rolls will be available until 11 a.m. A turkey noodle soup lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for $5; kids age 6 and younger eat for $3. The sale will include homemade noodles, baked goods, candies, hand crafts, jams and jellies, Doll House room and Granny’s Attic.
UC Cattlemen plan annual dinner
The Union County Cattlemen will meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Ag Service Center in Island City. The final details of the annual dinner will be presented during the business meeting. Dinner and raffle tickets will be available for purchase. The meeting is open to the public.
Barreto holds Chamber meeting at La Grande library
Representative Greg Barreto (R-Cove) of House District 58 will be in town Nov. 6 as part of a series of meetings with members of local Chambers of Commerce. The location of the Monday meeting has been changed to the Cook Memorial Library, 2006 Fourth St., La Grande. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m.
Public welcome at La Grande American Legion potlucks
The La Grande American Legion invites the public to its family potluck, held on the first Tuesday of the month. The November event is set for the 7th from 5 p.m. to
7 p.m. at 301 Fir St. Those who attend are asked to either bring a dish to share or a donation of $5 per person.
EOU recently ranked as one of the most affordable colleges
Eastern Oregon University has been identified as one of the most affordable colleges with high acceptance rates in Great Value Colleges’ recent ranking. EOU is ranked as number 42 out of the top
50 colleges. The ranking is based on U.S. News and World Report rankings combined with information from the National Center for Education Statistics’ College Navigator Database.
GRH Auxiliary sells candy to fund patient equipment
The Grande Ronde Hospital Auxiliary is selling See’s candy as a fundraiser for patient care equipment. Order forms are available at the Hospital Gift Shop and must be returned by 5 p.m. Nov. 13. The orders are expected to arrive Nov. 22. The Gift Shop will also carry a limited supply of See’s Candy for sale.
October was colder in La Grande this year
According to preliminary data received by NOAA’s National Weather Service in Pendleton, temperatures at La Grande averaged slightly colder than normal during the month of October. The average temperature was
47.3 degrees, 1.5 degrees below normal. High temperatures averaged 61.1 degrees, 1.2 degrees below normal. The highest was 80 degrees on the 2nd. Low temperatures averaged 33.4 degrees, 1.8 degrees below normal. The lowest was 24 degrees on the 31st. There were 11 days with the low temperature below 32 degrees.
Precipitation totaled 1.86 inches during October, 0.57 inches above normal. Measurable precipitation of at least .01 inch was received on seven days, with the heaviest, .60 inches, reported on the 23rd. Precipitation this year has reached 14.52 inches, 1.69 inches above normal.
The highest wind gust was 39 mph, which occurred on the 13th.
The outlook for November from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center calls for below normal temperatures and above normal precipitation. Normal highs for La Grande fall from 54 degrees at the start of November to 40 degrees at the end of November. Normal lows fall from 33 degrees to 26 degrees. The 30-year normal precipitation is 2.03 inches.

Union City Council will meet Monday
