Optimist youth football begins soon

LA GRANDE — La Grande Optimist Football invites all interested community members to a meeting with the USA West Region representative discussing the changes to and benefits of Rookie Tackle Football at 6 p.m. Aug. 20 at the La Grande Middle School. This year the program will be open to fifth and sixth grades (no longer fourth grade).

Registration and equipment handout will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21 and Aug. 22 at Pioneer Park’s Optimist Field. Cost is $65 per player. Each player will need to supply proof of a physical completed within the last three years. Camp begins at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 26 at Pioneer Park and will run for two hours. Crossroads seeks artwork from local and regional artists

BAKER CITY — Crossroads Carnegie Art Center in Baker City invites local and regional artists to submit their work for the 21st annual open regional show, Art at the Crossroads. Professional and amateur artists age 18 and older may submit up to three works of art not previously shown at a Crossroads open show. Artwork will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 30. The show will open during Baker City’s First Friday Art Walk Sept. 6 in the upstairs gallery at Crossroads, 2020 Auburn Ave. and will be available through Sept. 28. LG School Board meets for retreat

LA GRANDE — The Board of Directors of the La Grande School District has scheduled a special board meeting and board retreat next week. The meeting and retreat will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 23 in the Dixie Lund Room of Inlow Hall on the Eastern Oregon University campus.

Library offers guided and silent meditation sessions

LA GRANDE — Cook Memorial Library invites community members to experience a variety of meditation and relaxation techniques and styles in free meditation sessions led by Kitia Chambers beginning Sept. 4. The sessions will be every Wednesday from 5:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Community Room. Varying techniques and styles of meditation will be explored, including guided and silent meditation. Jubilee Lake Campground host sought

PENDLETON — The Umatilla National Forest is looking for volunteer campground hosts for Jubilee Lake Campground from now until October. Camp hosts greet campers and day-use visitors, provide information on the surrounding area, clean and maintain restrooms, restock supplies, occasionally clean up after campers and carry out minor maintenance as needed. Individuals or couples can apply to be hosts.

Those who apply will need to supply their own trailer, camper or motorhome. The campsite, a food allowance and propane are provided, and personal vehicle mileage associated with hosting duties is reimbursed. Vets offered lower interest rates for home loans

SALEM — The Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs has announced lower interest rates for its Oregon Veteran Home Loan Program. On July 17, the rates for Qualified Veterans Mortgage Bond loan products were lowered by 0.125% and the rates for Unrestricted loan products dropped 0.250%. ODVA is a lender and servicer of home loans exclusively for veterans in Oregon. A recent lending limit increase allows veterans to borrow up to $484,350 for a single-family owner-occupied residence in Oregon.

To be eligible for this Oregon benefit, a veteran must have served on active duty with the U.S. Armed Forces, as documented on discharge documents (DD-214), and must meet one of the service criteria outlined on ODVA’s website.
