A Sunday morning hay fire on Highway 203 about two miles west of Hot Lake destroyed about 200 tons of hay but caused no injuries, according to the La Grande Rural Fire Department.

The fire was reported at 9:20 a.m. The La Grande Rural, Imbler, Union and Cove fire departments and the Oregon Department of Forestry all responded to the fire, which was contained to haystacks. A total of about 20 firefighters combated the blaze.

Firefighters had the blaze contained and under control in less than 40 minutes although large amounts of smoke continued to rise from the site of the fire for several hours.
