La Grande residents are being urged to exercise caution when out at night following a second armed robbery in less than a week Friday.
“Be aware of your surroundings,” said Lt. Gary Bell of the La Grande Police Department.
Bell said people are encouraged to leave their porch lights on, and if they are outside at night they should go out in groups rather than alone.
The second armed robbery occurred just after 10 p.m. Friday in the area of North Greenwood Street near S Avenue and involved an unknown masked suspect. The victim was a La Grande resident, according to a La Grande Police Department news release.
The victim reported that he was walking on a sidewalk when he was approached from behind and robbed at gunpoint with a small handgun. The suspect left the area on foot, according to the release.
The male suspect is described as being approximately 6 feet tall with an average build and long dark-colored facial hair. The suspect was wearing dark clothing and the majority of his face was covered.
This is the second armed robbery in a week’s time with similar details, according to the release.
The first occurred near North Spruce Street and U Avenue at about 10:20 p.m. Nov. 26. Bell said that nobody was injured in either of the robberies and that no significant items were taken.
“Nothing of value was stolen,” Bell said.
The La Grande Police Department, Union County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon State Police are working together to investigate. At this time, a suspect has not been identified and the investigation is ongoing.
Bell said that law enforcement officers have been coming in at all times of the day and night to work on the case.
“We are doing absolutely everything we can,” Bell said.
Anyone who has information regarding either incident or who sees anything suspicious is urged to call the La Grande Police Department at 541-963-1017.
“We are asking the community to share with us. Even if it is anonymous, we would love to have information to follow up on,” Bell said.
