ELGIN — The annual Kris Kringle Children’s Shop will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Elgin Community Center, 260 N. 10th Ave. Children from Elgin, Imbler and Summerville are welcome to come buy gifts for their families. Two wineglass painting classes offered in December
Art Center East is offering two wineglass painting classes this month. No experience is necessary. Participants will learn techniques, explore different styles, then enjoy an evening of art therapy decorating four new wineglasses. The two-hour classes will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 9 and
6 p.m. Dec. 15 and are open to anyone age 21 and older.
The teaching artist is Kodi McCleary, who has painted hundreds of glasses over the past several years as the coordinator of wineglass painting for the Wallowa Valley Festival of Arts. Union and Cove seniors gather for holiday dinner
UNION — Sacred Heart Catholic Church’s annual senior citizen Christmas dinner will be served from noon to 2 p.m. Dec. 10 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 340 10th St., Union. All senior citizens in the communities of Union and Cove are invited to a complimentary turkey and ham dinner with all the trimmings. The event includes raffle prizes, a great meal and good company.
Weather Service predicts warmer, drier December
According to preliminary data received by NOAA’s National Weather Service in Pendleton, temperatures at La Grande averaged warmer than normal during November. The average temperature was 41.2 degrees, 3.2 degrees above normal. High temperatures averaged 50 degrees, 3.8 degrees above normal. The highest was 67 degrees on the 24th. Low temperatures averaged 32.5 degrees, 2.6 degrees above normal. The lowest was 20 degrees on the 6th. There were 13 days with the low temperature below 32 degrees.
Precipitation totaled 2.08 inches during November, 0.05 inches above normal. Measurable precipitation (at least .01 inch) was received on eight days, with the heaviest, 0.73 inches, reported on the 27th. Precipitation this year has reached 16.60 inches, 1.74 inches above normal. Since October, the water year precipitation at La Grande has been 3.94 inches, 0.62 inches above normal.
The highest wind gust in November was 55 mph on the 15th.
The outlook for December from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center calls for above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation. Normal highs for La Grande fall from 40 degrees at the start of December to 37
degrees at the end of December. Normal lows fall from 26 degrees to 23 degrees. The 30-year normal precipitation is 1.66 inches.
Art center’s gift shop extends Saturday hours for shopping

Registration is open for MedQuest Camp
High school students interested in jumpstarting their future health career are encouraged to apply for MedOuest Health Career Exploration Camp to be held June 18-22, 2018, at EOU. The camp is organized by the Northeast Oregon Area Health Education Center and is open to students completing 9th-12th grade. Participants will try out college dorm life, shadow health professionals, sit in on presentations and medical panels and get real-world experience such as witnessing a surgery or riding along on an ambulance call.
Approximately 35 students will be selected state-wide, with acceptance decisions based on recommendations, GPA and quality of application. Preference is given to first-time participants. Students who apply by Dec. 31 may qualify for early acceptance. The cost is $400 for the entire week, and a limited number of scholarships are available.
