Preparations are underway to Flora School festival

FLORA — This year’s pioneer festival at the Flora School takes place June 1. Volunteers are welcome to aid in preparation at a work day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 18. The day will include a potluck lunch. Ongoing projects include building garbage, installing handrailing, sorting books, finishing the windows in the gym and painting. There will also be work days on May 29-31 to finish projects, clean the school and grounds and set up for the big day.

Blacksmiths are encouraged to sign up for the Blacksmith Competition. All skill levels are welcome. There is a $50 entry fee, which will be used for prizes and donated to the Flora School Education Center. Bring your own forge (coal or gas) and fuel supply. The metal will be supplied for the contestants. All forged items will be auctioned off as a fundraiser for the education center. Entry for the Chili Cook-off is $5. Beans may already be cooked, but not canned. All other ingredients have to be prepared/cooked on site. The Flora School Education Center will provide a table for you, but you must provide everything else. Awards will be given, with the judging done through People’s Choice ($1 to sample and judge). Observe ballot counter test

LA GRANDE — The public is invited to observe the Logic and Accuracy test of the ballot counter for the May 21st Special District Election. This test will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 14 at the Union County Clerk’s Office, 1001 Fourth St., Suite D, La Grande. Space is limited, but we will accommodate as many as possible. Spring nominations for LG Beautification Awards due May 25

LA GRANDE — The City of La Grande Community Landscape and Forestry Commission recognizes efforts to maintain and improve the beauty of La Grande’s environment through exemplary landscape maintenance and design. Beautification Awards are seasonally given to residential and commercial properties that have been carefully landscaped and attract the viewer. These landscapes must be seen from public access and can include one or more the following criteria: integrating colors and textures, appropriate use of hardscapes, good use of space, resource conservation, wildlife habitat, seasonal diversity, food production, owners that have overcome special circumstances. Nomination forms are available at the Parks and Recreation Department, 2402 Cedar St. (inside Pioneer Park), and at www.lagrandeparks.org. Nominations may be returned to the Parks Department or by email to trees@cityoflagrande.org . The deadline for the spring award nominations is May 25.
