Union SWCD Board meets
ISLAND CITY — The Union Soil and Water Conservation District Board will meet at 7 p.m. June 12 in the conference room of the Union County Extension Office, 10507 N. McAlister Road, Island City. Principal subjects to be discussed are monthly financial statements, staff reports and partner agency reports. Homeschool used curriculum and book sale held in Union
UNION — The Grande Ronde Valley Classical Conversations Community Group will be hosting the second annual homeschool used curriculum and book sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 15 at the First Baptist Church of Union, 1531 S. Main St. The sale is a fundraiser for the local Classical Conversations families and gives local homeschooling families the opportunity to share curriculum, books and supplies. Examples of items that may be sold include textbooks, workbooks, teachers manuals, fiction/non-fiction books, school supplies, manipulatives, early learning tools, STEM toys, classroom posters/decorations, board games, educational DVDs/CDs and even parenting books.
Anyone who has educational materials, books and/or supplies to pass on is welcome to participate in this sale. Come to the Baptist Church between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. June 14 to set up your items. Earnings and unsold items must be picked up before 3 p.m. after the event. Any items/earnings not picked up by that time will be donated back to the Grande Ronde Valley Classical Conversations Community Group for future sales and fundraising.

Volunteers needed at Zumwalt Prairie Preserve June 22-23
WALLOWA COUNTY — The Nature Conservancy invites anyone interested in assisting conservation efforts on Zumwalt Prairie Preserve, located on the Imnaha River, to attend a volunteer work party June 22-23. Zumwalt Prairie Preserve is a key part of the largest remaining native bunchgrass prairie in North America, harboring 12,000 acres of abundant prairie habitat, 15,000 acres of canyonlands and 12 miles of creeks with spawning habitat for endangered Snake River steelhead and inland redband trout. Zumwalt is also home to one of the largest concentrations of nesting raptors in North America. During this work party, volunteers will assist with noxious weed surveys and removal, for a full day on Saturday and a half day Sunday.

Average temperature in May was 2 degrees warmer than normal
PENDLETON — According to preliminary data received by NOAA’s National Weather Service in Pendleton, temperatures at La Grande averaged warmer than normal during the month of May. The average temperature was 56.5 degrees, 2.1 degrees above normal. High temperatures averaged 69.7 degrees, 3.0 degrees above normal. The highest was 85 degrees on the 12th. Low temperatures averaged 43.4 degrees, 1.3 degrees above normal. The lowest was 26 degrees on the 1st. There was one day with the low temperature below 32 degrees.
Precipitation totaled 2.46 inches during May, 0.47 inches above normal. Measurable precipitation (at least .01 inch) was received on eight days, with the heaviest, 1.0 inches, reported on the 17th. Precipitation this year has reached 12.96 inches, 5.16 inches above normal. Since October, the water year precipitation at La Grande has been 18.57 inches, 5.79 inches above normal.
The outlook for June from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center calls for above normal temperatures and near normal precipitation. Normal highs for La Grande rise from 7 degrees at the start of June to 80 degrees at the end of June. Normal lows rise from 46 degrees to 52 degrees. The 30-year normal precipitation is 1.54 inches.
