M. Colleen DeGrofft, 91, of Hermiston and a former longtime Wallowa County resident, died Dec. 12 in Hermiston. She was born Sept. 30, 1925, in Richland. Leonard O. Hanks, 89, of Enterprise, died Dec. 6 a t his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 19 at St. Katherine’s Catholic Church. After the mass, a graveside service with military honors will be held at the Enterprise Cemetery followed by a reception at St. Katherine’s parish hall. An obituary will be published at a later time. William S. Pieper

La Grande

1920-2016

William “Bill” S. Pieper, 96, of La Grande, died Dec. 7 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A viewing will be held at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 17 at the La Grande Zion Lutheran Church, followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m.

Bill was born June 26, 1920, in La Grande, to Henry and Bessie (Ellsworth) Pieper. He attended Riveria Elementary School, La Grande Junior High and graduated from La Grande High School. In high school, Bill played football and baseball and ran track.

Bill served his country while in the Army during World War II in Europe with the 573 Battalion. He married Grace Ragsdale on May 31, 1944.

Bill worked at Joel’s Grocery Store, Union Pacific Railroad, Sweet’s Valley Sausage Meat Co. and the La Grande School District. In 1984, he retired as head custodian of the high school.

Bill coached women’s softball teams and the Riveria Elementary School girls basketball team. He was the president of the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show, an Exalted Ruler of the La Grande Elks Club and a member of the La Grande Breakfast Lions Club. Bill was also a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, where he served as president, treasurer, on the property board and on the church council.

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Tonya and John Cockram and Linda and Peter O’Rourke, all of Springfield; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and 15 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace; parents, Henry and Bessie; and brother, Verne.

Betty J. Neighbors

La Grande

1927-2016

Betty Jane Neighbors, 89, of La Grande and formerly of Milton-Freewater and Walla Walla, Washington, died Dec. 10 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of Betty’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Dec. 17 at Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center. A graveside service will be held sometime in May and will be announced at that time.

Betty was born April 23, 1927, in Silver City, Iowa, to Elmer and Beulah (Collier) Brammer. After graduating from high school, she attended cosmetology school. She was married to Lester Neighbors, and they moved to Walla Walla and then to Milton-Freewater 50 years ago.

Betty earned her CNA and worked for Elzora Manor in Milton-Freewater until her retirement. She moved to La Grande six years ago to be near family. Betty was a member of Rebekah Lodge of Milton-Freewater. She was the oldest of 10 children, and family was important to her. Betty enjoyed singing, being outdoors and watching the birds and squirrels.

Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Anderson of La Grande and Leslie Johnson of St. Petersburg, Florida; son, James Core of Adel, Iowa; sisters, Sandy Viner, Bonnie Christiansen Breakfield and Cheryl Helle, all of Omaha, Nebraska; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and niece, Ruth Marie Madison of Plattsmouth, Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Neighbors, in 1999 and son, Charles Neighbors, in 2005.

Dell E. Parsons

Elgin

1929-2016

Dell Earnest Parsons, 87, of Elgin, died Dec. 8 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Elgin Stampede Hall. Casual dress is preferred.

Dell was born Feb. 26, 1929, at the Parsons farm on Cricket Flat outside of Elgin, to Leonard and Elsie (Aldred) Parsons. He lived his entire life on the Parsons Century Family Farm, established in 1896. Dell attended elementary school in Elgin and graduated from Elgin High School.

On Sept. 17, 1949, Dell married Sallie D. Lorsung. It was a double wedding with her twin sister, Allie, and Raymond “Buzz” Farmer. Dell and Sallie were chosen co-grand marshals of the 2008 Elgin Stampede.

Dell was self-employed as a farmer and rancher on the Parsons farm all his life. In his earlier years, he also worked for various gas stations and logging jobs to make ends meet. In 1964, he started the night shift at La Grande Boise Cascade Sawmill and retired after 26 years.

Dell enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobiling, dancing, flying and woodworking. He always tried to make time for a week-long family vacation every summer and enjoyed exploring new places. His passions in life were his family, animals and farming. He was a longtime member of the La Grande Elks Lodge, Elgin Stampeders and the LDS Church.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Sallie; son, Earnest R. Parsons of Elgin; daughter and son-in-law, Jill M. Parsons-Chaffee and Rod Chaffee of Elgin; siblings and their spouses, Dick and Laura Parsons and Phyllis and Joe Bechtel, all of Elgin; one grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Elsie; sisters, LaRue Parsons, Chloe Phippen, Ruby Kuhn, Alta Hunt and June Gray.
