Teddy “Ted ” Delmer Atkinson

Teddy “ Ted ” Delmer Atkinson, 71, of La Grande, passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at his residence. A celebration of life will be held later this summer where his ashes will be spread at his favorite timber property.
Ted was born on December 16, 1947 in Baker City, Oregon to John and LaVelle (Givens) Atkinson. He resided in Hereford, OR; Fossil, OR; Baker City, OR; Prineville, OR and La Grande, OR. He attended school in Fossil and Baker City and was a multi-sport athlete in high school. He attended the University of Idaho, where he played football and joined ROTC. In 1967, he transferred to Eastern Oregon University, where he played football and completed his Masters Degree, in 1970. In 1996, he earned his Doctorate Degree from Southwestern University.
Ted worked for Boise Cascade; Prineville School District and Eastern Oregon University. Ted ’s first priority was his family, he and Patty were married for 51 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, huckleberry picking, mushrooming, traveling, playing golf, coin collecting, working to improve his timber property and following grandson Logan’s baseball games. He played on the Adult Softball League and with the City League Basketball, and coached Little League Baseball. His other favorite things to do were to watch Mariners Baseball, Portland Trail Blazers and the Seattle Seahawks. He was awarded the Sam Walton Fellow award for his involvement in SIFE 2000-2002, was a Professor Emeritus (Tenured), and received the National Guard’s “Being a Pro” award as a supervisor of Guardsman employees. He was a member of the Prineville Elks, La Grande Optimist Club, National Wildland Firefighters Association and was a proud member of the Northern Cherokee Nation and a descendent of the Osage Nation.
Ted is survived by his wife, Patty; son Lee Atkinson of La Grande; daughter Lisa Atkinson (Robert Aguirre) of Seattle, WA and Hawaii; brother, Laine (Vicki) Atkinson of Caldwell, ID; sister, Rhonda (Herb) Hickman of Bend, OR; 2 grandchildren, Logan Atkinson and Brittany Seavert of La Grande; sister-in-law, Terri Hocker (Gayle), brother-in-law, Charles Fisher (Mardell) 12 nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews, and his aunt Evelyn and uncle Bob Wells. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and LaVelle and grandparents, Elmer and Ethel Graven, and sister-in-law, Larae Hocker and brother-in-law, Michael Fisher and Patty’s parents, Bill and Macel Fisher.
