Robert L. Byrne

Formerly of La Grande

Robert Leon Byrne, 88, formerly of La Grande, died June 13 at his home in Nampa, Idaho, after a long illness. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. July 6 in the Eagle Valley Cemetery in Richland, where he and his son David will be interred next to his parents.

Known as Bob, he was born Sept. 7, 1930, in Sparta, to Ralph and Gladys (Garrett) Byrne. He attended grade school at Goose Creek School and high school in Baker City. Bob served in the U.S. Army in Korea after the war.

Bob’s big passions in life were his family and cars. As an adult, his career was selling cars with the exception of working in Sun Valley, Idaho, for a short time. He sold cars for Phillips Long Ford in Baker City and for Hand Ford Motor in La Grande for several years before moving to California and starting his own car lot. Bob and his family then moved to Nampa, Idaho, where he owned Heartland Car and Tractor on Caldwell Boulevard for many years. His last love affair with a car was his 1928 Dodge, which he completely restored. He enjoyed driving his beloved car around Nampa and loved the honks and waves he got from people.

Surviving relatives include his sons and their wives, Wayne, Randy, Tony and Kathy, Danny and Cathy, and Larry; eight grandchildren; and sisters, Betty Myers and Bonnie Dunn.

He was preceded in death by his son, David; parents, Ralph and Gladys; brothers, Joe and Tiny; and sisters, Freda, Myrtle and Ada.

Condolences may be sent to 1912 Tyler St., Nampa, ID 83686.
