The Eastern Oregon women’s wrestling team went 1-2 in three duals at the Women’s West Coast Tournament of Champions Friday in Rocklin, California.

EOU opened with a 20-18 victory over Grays Harbor. Leah Olsen (109 pounds) and Cassidy Freeman (116) earned victories for the Mountaineers, who secured enough wins by forfeit to take the match.

The Mountaineers struggled in their second dual, losing 33-11 to Southern Oregon. Alevis Cavero recorded a first-round pin at 155 for EOU and Freeman earned a point for scoring in her match against Nikki Mae Sumagang, though Freeman lost by decision, 13-7.

Cavero had the lone win in the final dual, a 45-4 loss to Emmanuel College in which EOU forfeited six matches. Cavero earned a 13-2 technical fall.

Saturday, Eastern took fifth in the tournament at the WCCTOC with 56 points.

Olsen placed third at 109, going 3-1 and finishing with a win over Menlo’s Alexa Christoforatos by fall.

Jessica DeHart placed fourth at 116, going 2-2 and dropping the third-place match to Emmanuel’s Alexis Encinas, by a 10-0 technical fall.

Cavero went 3-2 to take fifth, winning the fifth place match over teammate Renay Monohan by fall. Monohan, who went 2-3, took sixth.

Madisen Bozovich also took sixth for Eastern at 191. She earned a quarterfinal win over Menlo’s Christie Sanchez by a 10-0 technical fall, but dropped her last three matches.

Eastern is off until Jan. 5 when it travels to the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

EOU men battle at Reno

The EOU men’s team sent 10 competitors to the Reno Tournament of Champions Sunday.

Drake Randall had the top turnout for Eastern, going 3-2 at 157 pounds. He earned two wins by fall and added an 11-7 decision over unattached Clackamas wrestler Mitchell Willett before falling in the consolation bracket.

Jacob Dupuis went 2-2 at 165. He shook of an early loss to earn a pair of wins, including a victory by fall over unattached BYU wrestler Bailey Carson.

Braeden Phillips went 1-2, notching his lone win over Umpqua’s Brayden Schultz by a 4-3 decision.

Mhar Caballa opened with a 16-3 major decision over unattached Providence wrestler Michael Lafuel in the round of 32, but dropped his second and third matches to a pair of Oklahoma State grapplers.

A.J. Rockwell went 0-2 at 141, his closest match was a 10-3 loss to Cal State Bakersfield’s Carlos Hererra.

Jacob Posey dropped two at 149 pounds, both by fall.

K.J. Swanson, who wrestled unattached, went 1-2 with a fall over unattached Simpson wrestler Lucas Warnock. Marco Retano, Hans Rockwell and Brendon Vladic also wrestled unattached, and went 0-2.

EOU is off until it travels to Missoula, Montana, for a matchup against North Idaho College Jan. 13.
