The Powder Valley boys needed a fierce fourth-quarter rally and overtime to get past Prairie City, but came through in the clutch.
Hunter Davis scored 22 points and grabbed six steals, and the Badgers shook off a lackluster first half and a 19-point fourth-quarter deficit to top Prairie City on the road, 80-76, in overtime Tuesday.
Dawson Smith added 16 points, Tanner Eubanks had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Omar Benites had 12 points and eight assists for the Badgers. Prairie City had two players dominate on the scoreboard, getting 35 points from Levi Burke and 33 from Dorran Wilson.
Powder Valley was down 37-17 at the break, and 58-39 after three quarters before storming back. Eubanks had nine in the fourth quarter and Davis had seven, and the Badgers outscored the Panthers 27-8 in the fourth to even the score at 66-all and force the extra session.
Smith and Benites both had four points in overtime as the Badgers pulled ahead for good.
The Badgers (5-1 overall) face Prairie City again Thursday, this time at home.
Stanfield 40, Imbler 38: The Panthers came up just shy of their second victory of the season, dropping a tight battle against the visiting Tigers.
Imbler held a slim 19-17 lead at the break before Stanfield inched ahead 29-27 after three quarters and eventually held on.
Jayce Burnette led Imbler with 12 points. Chance Goodman had eight, including five in the fourth quarter as the Panthers tried to rally. Cade Gorham added seven points and Wade McDonald had six.
Brody Woods led Stanfield with 16 points.
Imbler (1-6 overall) travels to Nixyaawii tonight.
Powder Valley 65, Prairie City 36: Kim Williams scored a game-high 19 points and hit four 3-pointers, and the Badgers pulled away from the Panthers in the second half to stay undefeated.
Powder Valley led 26-19 at halftime, but outscored Prairie City 18-8 in the third quarter and 21-9 in the fourth to take command.
Sam Kerns and Josie Ash joined Williams in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Kerns also grabbed nine rebounds. Logan Nedrow added seven assists and four steals.
Brianna Zweygardt led the Panthers with 14 points.
Powder Valley (7-0 overall) faces Jordan Valley at the Union Christmas Classic Thursday.
Stanfield 52, Imbler 48: Caysie McGinness scored 16 points, including nine in the first half, and Hannah Kilpatrick added 15, but Stanfield took over the lead in the third quarter and had just enough to hold off the Panthers and earn its first win of the season.
The teams played to a 28-all tie at the break. The Tigers gained a bit of separation to take a 42-38 lead after three quarters and kept the Panthers at bay in the fourth.
Trinity McKaig added 12 points for Imbler. Kendra Hart had 24 to lead Stanfield.
The Panthers (2-5 overall) visit Nixyaawii tonight.
Monday’s Boys Game
La Grande JV 38, Elgin 37: Brandon Howes scored a game-high 15 points, but it was the La Grande JV that escaped with the victory in a tight matchup against Elgin.
The teams were never more than three points apart after any quarter. La Grande led 14-11 after one, 18-15 at halftime and just 29-28 after three.
Caleb Lathrop added 12 points for the Huskies, who hurt themselves by missing 14 free throws in the contest. Justin Jenner led the La Grande JV with 11 points.
The Huskies (4-3 overall) face Crane Thursday at the Union Christmas Classic.
