Former Eastern Oregon University runner Isaac Updike was the winner in the preliminary round of the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships Friday in Des Moines, Iowa.

He posted a time in the race of 8 minutes, 25.82 seconds, which was 2.6 seconds faster than the next closest time and a personal record.

Updike, who graduated from EOU in 2015, wasn’t able to maintain the magic in the finals on Sunday, as he finished 14th with a time of 8:40.22.

Evan Jager, of Nike/Bowerman TC, was the winner in the finals with a time of 8:20.10.
