Three members of the Union/Cove girls cross country team finished in the top 10, leading the Bobcats to a victory at the Runners Soul XC Fest Saturday in Hermiston.
Union/Cove finished with 65 points, barely edging out the Enterprise Outlaws, who scored 69 points.
Alisa Fox led Union/Cove with a fourth-place finish, coming in a time of 20:59.4. Audrey Wells (21:19.0) was seventh and Jaimee Baxter (21:44.4) placed 10th. The rest of the Bobcats’ top five were Abriel O’Reilly (23:04.7), who took 23rd, and Kaitlin Martens (23:38.9), who came in 27th.
The Outlaws had two runners in the top 10 and four in the top 16. Kyla Hook led the way with a second place finish in a time of 20:41.8. Ellyse Tingelstad placed sixth in 21:11.7. Ella Coughlan (22:13.6) followed in 14th, and Ashley Wilson (22:18.0) was 16th. Sydney Rouse rounded out Enterprise’s top five in 24:11.0.
The La Grande Tigers, who placed sixth with 153 points, had two runners in the top five. Maia Vandervlugt came in third in 20:54.3, and Abby Crews was fifth in 21:04.9. The rest of the Tigers’ top five were Corbyn Sexton (24:23.8) in 44th, Jenna Ault (25:19.8) in 55th and Yo Saito (26:22.5) in 67th.
Two competitors ran for the Elgin Huskies: Jocelyn Palmer (22:58.2) who placed 22nd, and Anika Jacobson (25:05.8) who came in 51st.
Stevens leads Bobcat boys to second place
Tim Stevens came in first place, Jack Silveira also finished in the top 10, and the Union/Cove boys cross country team took second at the Runners Soul XC Fest Saturday in Hermiston.
Stevens finished the race in a time of 15:44.0, coming in 12 seconds ahead of runner-up Brayden Packard of West Valley High School in Yakima, Washington, and more than a minute in front of third-place Hunter Nichols of Heppner (16:51.4).
Silveira placed seventh with a time of 17:01.3. The rest of the Bobcats’ top five were 14th-place Andrew Lackey (17:40.2), 27th-place Israel O’Reilly (18:30.1) and 38th-place Jaxon Blackburn (18:54.7).
Union/Cove scored 85 points. West Valley was the top team with 43 points.
The Enterprise Outlaws took seventh with 165 points, led by four freshmen. Henry Coughlan (17:33.8) placed 12th to lead the Outlaws. Bayden Menton (18:08.8) placed 20th, Zac Knapp (18:24.1) took 25th and Ian Goodrich (19:24.2) was 53rd. Rounding out the top five for Enterprise was Brenden Moore (19:39.8) in 61st place.
Bennett Welch led the La Grande Tigers, who were in eighth with 173 points, with a sixth-place finish, coming in at 16:59.2. Cristian Mendoza cracked the top 10 with a 10th place finish in a time of 17:21.4. The rest of La Grande’s top five were Braxton Bisenius (19:13.8) in 46th, Eli McLean (19:22.5) in 51st and Donald Sweet (20:00.0) in 68th.
Jordan Palmer led three runners for the Elgin Huskies in 75th with a time of 20:17.9. Kaden McClure (20:42.9) was 80th, and Brandon Caldwell (24:20.1) was 113th.
The teams are in action again Friday at the Catherine Creek Scamper.
Imbler reaches tourney final
The Imbler Panthers volleyball team took second place at the Griswold Tournament Saturday, defeating host Griswold (25-14, 25-13) in the quarterfinals and Cove (25-19, 25-18) in the semifinals before falling in the tournament title match to Heppner (25-19, 25-14).
Caysie McGinness led the Panthers’ attack in all three matches, and finished with 19 kills. Karrington Troyer dished out 41 assists, four aces and had 19 digs, and Aspen Smith had 11 kills and 17 digs.
Imbler (7-4 overall) hosts Powder Valley Thursday.
Cove reaches semis
The Cove Leopards went 1-1 in bracket play at the Griswold Tournament, defeating McLoughlin in the quarterfinals (25-12, 25-11) and falling to Imbler in the semifinals (25-19, 25-18)
Cove went 2-1 in pool play, beating Umatilla and Griswold before losing to Heppner. Stats were not available.
Cove (4-4 overall) travels to Joseph Thursday.
Outlaws top Elgin
Ashlyn Gray had seven kills and seven aces, leading the Enterprise Outlaws to a win (25-19, 25-19, 25-12) over the Elgin Huskies Saturday.
Lexie Gassett, Shelby Moncrief and Rylin Kirkland added three aces apiece, and Claire Farwell chipped in with three kills.
Elgin was led by Kaelin Evans, who had three kills, three blocks and three aces. Jayden Palmer also had three kills, and Lille Harvey recorded eight digs.
Enterprise (4-2 overall) travels to Joseph Friday, while Elgin (1-5) visits Griswold Tuesday.
Union wins in Condon
The Union Bobcats won four matches at the Summit Springs Tournament Saturday in Condon, defeating Ione (26-24, 25-16), Stanfield (25-18, 25-10), Condon/Wheeler (25-14, 25-9) and Prairie City (25-17, 25-13).
Autumn Daggett had 19 aces to lead the service attack and also recorded 23 kills. Kalin Nowak led the Bobcats with 32 kills, Callie Glenn had 64 assists, Brianna Kohr tallied 19 digs and Ahnica Shoemaker collected nine blocks.
The Bobcats (6-2 overall) host Stanfield Thursday.
Cove edges Elgin
The Cove Leopards outlasted the Elgin Huskies in a five-set Old Oregon League battle Friday night, coming away with a 25-12, 21-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-6 victory.
Tymra Anderson had seven kills and three blocks to lead Elgin. Lille Harvey added 15 digs, Kaelin Evans also had three blocks, and Jayden Palmer was 22-for-23 serving with an ace. Stats were not available for Cove.
Badgers top Wallowa
The Powder Valley Badgers kept its perfect record intact with a four-set road win against the Wallowa Cougars in both teams’ Old Oregon League opener Friday, 25-20, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20.
Shanna Rae Tillery led the Cougars with 18 kills and Riley Ferre added 14.
Stats were not available for Powder Valley.
The Badgers (12-0 overall, 1-0 OOL) travel to Imbler Thursday, while Wallowa (1-6, 0-1) hosts Joseph Tuesday.
