The La Grande junior all-star baseball team completed its sweep through the losers bracket at the state tournament in Bend today with a 6-2 win over Del Norte, California, to advance to the championship round Wednesday.
La Grande will play Murrayhill at 2 p.m. If La Grande wins that game the two teams will face off again, at around 5 p.m., for the state title.
Today's win avenged La Grande's 8-6 to Del Norte in the opening round on Saturday. In today's game Jace Schow started on the mound with a 20-pitch limit to ensure he would be available to start Wednesday. He didn't allow a baserunner and pitched 2 and 1/3 innings before giving way to Lakoda Huff, who finished the game. "He just dominated today," La Grande Coach Doug Schow said of Huff.
Offensively, Cole Shafer had the big hit, a three-run home run that came with two outs, and two strikes, in the third inning. Shafer said he swung on a high inside pitch and tucked the ball just inside the left field foul pole. Owen Rinker had a sacrifice fly and Sam Tsiatsos had two hits.
