Maya Ah You-Dias led three Mountaineers in scoring with 13 points as No. 7 Eastern Oregon opened the season with a 70-52 win over Bethesda, California, Friday afternoon.

Maren Herrud added 12 points and Stormee Van Belle had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Payton Parrish added seven points and a game-high 12 boards.

The story, though, was EOU’s rebounding and defense. The Mountaineers held a massive 61-30 advantage on the boards, including grabbing 25 offensive rebounds, and limited Bethesda to just 29.5 percent shooting for the contest.

EOU, which never trailed, held a 31-20 lead at halftime, extended it to 46-32 by the end of the third quarter and led by as much as 30 in the fourth when it opened the final period on a 16-0 run.

Briah Nelson scored 30 points to lead Bethesda, but the rest of the team accounted for just 22 points on 7-for-40 shooting.

EOU (1-0 overall) faces William Jessup Saturday night.
